The study combines data from the European Social Survey (–) on 21 countries with country-cohort information on education policies. Moreover, a difference-in-difference design is used, which takes advantage of both the cross-national and cross-temporal variability in the implementation of comprehensive schooling reforms. A three‐year longitudinal, ethnographic study compared four comprehensive high schools and four newly formed high schools with a “STEM focused structure” in communities with low SES populations in Buffalo, New York, and Denver, Colorado (Eisenhart et al., ; Weis et al., ). These were neighborhood schools converted into STEM.
